Nederburg Nose to Tail

This is the first post in a new section I am adding to the site called Out&About.  It will contain mostly images and short blurbs of text describing an event or outing of some sort that I attended.  I usually just post the pics on Instagram, but I thought it would be cool to compile them into short posts on the blog.

I was invited by Nederburg to a Nose to Tail Media Lunch on Friday, 19 July 2013 to showcase the Nederburg Heritage Heroes range of wines.  Lunch was to be cooked by none other than my main man Pete Goffe-Wood with wine pairing done by Nederburg’s Cellarmaster Razvan Macici, who introduced the rather awesome wines to us with a couple of short anecdotes regarding the history behind the range.

I am a big fan of the whole Nose to Tail movement, which is summed up  in this quote by Fergus Henderson : “If you’re going to kill the animal it seems only polite to use the whole thing.” I wholeheartedly agree with this outlook and have always been a big fan of offal and the lesser known cuts.

THE MENU

Sauté of Veal Sweetbreads, Pancetta, Capers & Sage Beurre Noisette – paired with Nederburg Heritage Heroes – The Young Airhawk 2012

Jellied Ham & Parsley Terrine, Sourdough Toast – paired with Nederburg Heritage Heroes – The Anchorman 2012

BBQ Beef Short Rib, Sweet Corn Custard & Salsa – paired with Nederburg Heritage Heroes – The Beautiful Lady 2012

Roast Pork Belly, Mash, Prune & Peppercorn Sauce – paired with Nederburg Heritage Heroes – The Motorcycle Marvel 2010

Braised Pork Cheeks  Bourguignon – paired with Nederburg Heritage Heroes – The Brew Master 2010

Strawberries of a Thousand Leaves – paired with Nederburg Winemaster’s Reserve – Noble Late Harvest 2012

The food was really out of this world. I told Pete afterwards that it was one of, if not THE best meals of my life.  The man knocked it out the park, finish en klaar.

I’ll be the first to admit that I know absolutely nothing about wine, and was mainly there for the food, but the pairing really worked well, both food and wine working together to bring out the best in each other.

Big thanks for Nederburg for inviting me to this epic event, the experience has opened my eyes to the wonders of food and wine pairings. I believe it’s high time that I get myself a touch more educated about wine.  Anybody up to the task?

Disclosure: I was invited by Nederburg to attend the lunch, I did not pay for the meal.  Nederburg also gave us a bottle of their newly released “The Beautiful Lady” to take home as a gift.
